When Ewing School is CLOSED:
Ewing SchoolPreschoolEwing School
has six preschool classes serving students
with and without disabilities. Preschool
children ages 3-5 with special needs are provided services based upon their
IEP (Individual Education Plan.) Referral
to Ewing School must be made by the child's local school district prior to any
services being offered. Once all
eligibility criteria have been met the IEP will
outline needs and goals of the child. The Ewing Preschool operates integrated classrooms with the majority of children identified as having a disability. Preschoolers without disabilities must participate in a screening session to be enrolled as a typical partner at Ewing School. We hope this experience helps the typically developing child grow to accept persons with disabilities as part of everyday life. HeadstartThe
Washington County Board of Developmental Disabilities and The Washington-Morgan
Community Action have joined together to offer two Head Start and sessions at Ewing School. Head Start activities are age
appropriate for 3 to 5 year olds and follow a curriculum that is designed to include all the readiness skills needed for
kindergarten.
In order to eligible for Head Start you
must meet 100%
of poverty income guidelines. School AgeThe School Age Program offers specialized instruction to students
ages 6 to 22 who need training and education. One of the leading
objectives of the overall program is to assist the students in acquiring new
skills which promote self reliance and community involvement.
This is accomplished through a positive, non-threatening, nurturing
environment which enables learning in an atmosphere that fosters self-esteem and
achievement. The School Age Program
of Ewing School is chartered by the Ohio Department of Education and follows its
rules and regulation for the provision of special education and related
services. Potential students of
Ewing School are referred by their local school districts for placement.
Once the referral has been received, admission becomes contingent upon
the eligibility criteria being met. This
includes measurement by the COEDI, approval of the placement by the local school
district, the parents/guardian and the agreement by the WCBDD about the
appropriateness of the placement. Once admitted to Ewing
School, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed by an interdisciplinary
team. The IEP outlines goals,
objectives, educational services and possible ancillary support services for the
student. All programs, including
transportation are provided at no cost to the family.
The IEP is reviewed annually by the parents/guardian, WCBDD staff and a
representative of the student’s home school district. Ancillary services
such as speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, aquatics, and
case management services are also
available. Staff are trained and
experienced to meet the specific needs of each child which may involve medical
and therapy needs, and the provision of a specialized curriculum.
Instructional programming for the students may include: Ø The ability to communicate
effectively Ø Managing personal care needs Ø Understanding oneself and relating/
interacting with others Ø Pre-Vocational training Ø Home, school and community
responsibilities Ø Appropriate play and/or leisure time skills Prior to any student
transitioning from Ewing School to Adult Services, an OEDI must be completed to
satisfy the eligibility criteria. Individuals
may be placed on a waiting list for available Adult Services if enrollment is
full; placement into the adult program is not automatic for Ewing students. Contact:
